them records welcomes back hiroaki iizuka for the its fifth outing. having supplied the the run as the labels first record, here iizuka doubles its play time and track listing length in his stunning voodoo ep. the extra time offered allows iizuka to flex more of his versatile style. them as a label sets out to eschew a techno norm largely made up of a traditional 4 x 4 sound. having come from a london background, the curating of the label gives a nod to the rave sounds of the capital - especially d&b, garage, breakbeat hardcore and grime. that is to say of course along with its characteristic aesthetic of horror and the gothic.
in iizuka them found a common ground: based in hokkaido, japan, iizuka does not share the same london influences, yet shares their base values and thrust. common themes of his sound involve broken and syncopated beats, and a rave energy. this is what lead him to being the first and prime them stable artist. voodoo ep showcases this breadth of iizuka�s style, from tracks that could easily fit into any grime set, such as primitive acid, to the more melodic tones of floating point, in which hiroaki guides them into previously untrodden ground for the imprint.

enduring ambient and soundtrack specialist john beltran has finished another full length album for delsin records. entitled espais, it lands in summer 2015 and features 17 beautiful tracks that range from dreamy and heavenly to more meaning and moving. emotional from start to finish, it once again finds beltran using moderns tools and techniques with classical musical values. part synthetic and machine made, part organic and natural, it is another fine opus from the michigan man.

tropics a.k.a. chris ward first appeared on planet mu last year, following up two eps with the album parodia flare. commended by pitchfork for his lush soundscapes and hazy pop, whats clear with tropics is that he listens to a lot of dance music and he cares about production values. the synth and beat programming is as competent as anything out there, and he avoids lazy indie stylings and one button bontempi organ beats � his are crafted songs, much of the pleasure lying in his gift for dynamic arrangement, which is a joy amid rafts of useful formulaically assembled house tracks.
in common with the general post-financial collapse vibe there is less sunshine in this ep than before, and he has absorbed something from a year of intensive house music listening, but chris essential qualities remain a forward-looking wistfulness, hope beneath melancholy, something even more acutely needed now than before. oh look! here comes winter.
